- การย้อม

น้ำที่ใช้ย้อมได้มาจากการนำต้นห้อมมาหมักในน้ำ จนใบห้อมเน่า ได้น้ำสีเขียวไข่กามีกลิ่นเหม็น จากนั้นนำใบห้อมที่เน่าแล้วทิ้งไป และนำใบห้อมใหม่มาหมักในน้ำเดิมจนเน่าเหม็นเข้มข้นขึ้น ได้น้ำห้อมสีฟ้า จากนั้นกรองกากห้อมทิ้งไปเหลือแต่น้ำ เมื่อนำน้ำที่ได้ไปหมักกับปูนขาว กวนให้ขึ้นฟอง เมื่อน้ำทำปฏิกิริยากับอากาศ จะได้น้ำสีน้ำเงินเข้มหรือสีคราม เมื่อกรองเอาแต่น้ำสี ใส่ในหม้อดินใบใหญ่จึงเรียกว่า "หม้อห้อม"

การย้อมผ้าหรือเส้นด้าย ให้เป็นสีหม้อห้อม จะต้องย้อมหลาย ๆ ครั้ง โดยผสมขมิ้น ฝักส้มป่อยเผา หรือน้ำมะขามเปียก และน้ำด่างที่ได้จากการเกรอะขี้เถ้าและเหล้าป่า หรือน้ำอ้อย

ผ้าหม้อห้อมเมื่อใช้งานไปนาน ๆ สีจะซีดลง และต้องนำกลับมาย้อมใหม่อยู่เสมอ ซึ่งต่างจากผ้าสีครามที่ได้จากการย้อมด้วยสีสังเคราะห์ทางเคมี ซึ่งสีจะไม่ซีด เมื่อผ่านการซักล้าง
